Living architecture - Second skin

BIO PARAMETRIC DESIGN - Kinetic Facade as a base for design

Current research on environmental sustainability and zero waste energy predominantly emphasizes the construction of new buildings. However, it is imperative that we also address the energy efficiency of existing structures. It is essential to develop solutions that can be broadly applied to enhance the energy performance of these buildings.

The future of architecture is hidden within the intersection of technology and biology. It’s crucial to develop systems which will create a complete dialog with environment, the system which will be able to improve the energy efficiency of the already existing matter. Parametric design opened many doors and its a perfect tool to enable us to change the world . My solution for the problem is to create a flexible design of penalization ,with several advantages for environment included.

Why Eco ? - Energy

Proposal is to improve energy efficiency of existing buildings by implication of new biological facade . Each panel contains several elements , one of them is perforated sheet made out of thermo-bimetal. Material responds to the temperature change - when its sunny its closed , when its cloudy it opens . It works just like kinetic facade. This ability enable naturally to interact with local climate conditions.

Each panel works individually so its easy to create a network of them in whatever configuration needed. Creation of the ‘second skin‘ can cover only a part of the existing building.

Why Eco ? - Light

BIOLUMINESCENT DEVICES - glowing bacteria

In order to allow the facade to glow in the dark we can use the second configuration. It means to implamante into our panelization genetically modicited algae. How it works ? We can extract from DNA of bacteria (Vibrio fischeri) , a gene that allows it to naturally glow with bright green light in the dark under water. After we combine this part of gene into the algae gene we achieve this glowing abilities. (The extraction study was first made by Eduardo Mayoral Gonzalez, who discovered this opportunity and succeeded in it. )

It is amazing opportunity to push forward the research where bioluminescent devices are used in order to provide zero-electricity lighting.
